Premium Cataract Surgery and Refractive Lens Exchange Center A first-of-its-kind cataract and premium intraocular lens surgery center, SightTrust Eye Institute provides customized vision correction plans for patients with lens changes, hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), and astigmatism, using the most advanced technology available in the field. SightTrust was among the first ophthalmic centers to offer laser-assisted cataract surgery, and is one of the only centers in the country to exclusively perform laser-assisted cataract surgery on every patient. And for those patients who qualify, Dr. Shatz offers bilateral same day cataract surgery – both eyes at the same time! In addition to cataract and lens exchange procedures, SightTrust Eye Institute specializes in phakic intraocular lens implantation – placing a “contact lens” inside the eye to treat myopia, hyperopia, and/or astigmatism. This procedure is a terrific alternative to laser vision correction for those who either are not LASIK candidates or prefer a “reversible” option.
A highly-respected, board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Shatz is the Medical Director of SightTrust Eye Institute. Dr. Shatz has advanced training in topical, laser-assisted cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery, clear-corneal (“no-stitch”) cataract surgery, multifocal and accommodating implants, and phakic intraocular lens implant surgery. With more than 20,000 intraocular lens procedures performed over the past 19 years, he is believed to be the Southeast’s leading implanter of the ReSTOR multifocal and Artisan phakic premium intraocular lenses. A national lecturer to both optometrists and ophthalmologists, Dr. Shatz is an assistant clinical professor at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also sits on several clinical advisory panels and has developed various surgical instruments to aid in cataract surgery. Dr. Shatz has operated on leaders in the entertainment, sports, and business world, and has developed techniques and instruments for use in lens surgery. Dr. Shatz often teaches his surgical techniques to other ophthalmologists in the country, and is frequently called upon by his colleagues to treat their most difficult cases. Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Dr. Shatz received a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honors from the prestigious McGill University and he attended the Medical College of Georgia, where he graduated cum laude. Following medical school, Dr. Shatz completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Cornell/North Shore University Hospital and his residency in ophthalmology at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, where he was Chief Resident. Dr. Shatz provides consultative and surgical services to his colleagues in ophthalmology, optometry and various medical specialties, and has a patent pending on a surgical instrument to aid in cataract surgery. He has been published in the Millennium edition of the Who’s Who in Medicine, and has been recognized as one of the nation’s top ophthalmologists by the Consumer’s Research Council of America. Dr. Shatz is married and the proud father of three young boys.
